Torre Grossa was built in 1310. The towers in San Gimignano were once used as a way of defending against outside attacks. The wealthy families could show their power and privileged position in this way.
San Gimignano's tallest tower, the Torre Grossa in Piazza del Duomo, is open to visitors.
The tower is 54 meters high and has 218 steps to the top. The steps are easy to access with young children. The last bit to the top has to be done on a steep ladder. You will then find yourself at a beautiful vantage point. The view is fantastic.
