The church was built in 1659 in Baroque style, with the adjacent "monastery boarding school for sheltered women" built in 1684. It was enlarged and embellished in the 18th century and restored again in the 19th century. The structure of the building has been improved in recent years to make it better suited to modern requirements.
On April 24 , 1647, the four municipal councilors founded a House for the Converted or Sheltered Women ("converted sinners"), to avoid sins and the temptations of the devil. This institution was called "House of the Sisters of Penance" and they had to live thanks to the alms of people and according to the rules of the Bishop of Mazara del Vallo; they were forced to undergo penitential practices and severe corporal punishment .
