The Way of Wood

The hiking trail named "The Wood Road - historical and cultural itinerary among the woods of the municipalities of Toceno and Craveggia" starts from the locality of Promez in the municipality of Toceno to the locality of Bagni di Craveggia in the municipality of Craveggia, creating a unique connection with national and international hiking routes.
You reach the locality of Promez in Toceno, and at the last houses, you take the mule track (path M25 - SI - GTA) that leads to the Colma di Toceno (Colma di Fuori), crossing a coniferous forest. Exiting the forest, you ascend to the meadows and reach the huts of the pasture, from where you can admire one of the most enchanting views of the valley. Upon reaching a wide track, you turn left and follow it to the Colma di Dentro, from where you can admire the panorama of the Valle di Arvogno, the Pioda di Crana, and the Scheggia. Near a restored hut, a trail begins that leads eastward on flat ground, among rhododendrons and ancient larches, until you reach the Piana di Vigezzo. (This section of the trail from Promez to the Piana di Vigezzo can be bypassed using the cable car that ascends from the locality of Prestinone).
From the Piana di Vigezzo, you take the mule track to the right of the former Ratagin refuge (M25-SI-GTA) and enter a well-signposted wide uphill track that, after a flat section, narrows into a never-too-steep mule track until reaching the Bocchetta di Moino (m. 1974). From here, with a small detour, you can reach the "Girola Gallery," an ancient rock gallery about 80 meters long through which a cable car passed for the logging from Fondo Monfracchio (loading station) that ascended to the Bocchetta di Moino where it traveled through the gallery section. It then descended on the Vigezzo side down to the locality of Siberia, near Santa Maria Maggiore (total length of the cable car was 9 km).
Inside the gallery was the engine station and junction of the cable car and two huts where the cable car operator lived with his family.
From the Bocchetta di Moino, you proceed towards the Bivacco Greppi of CAI Vigezzo (currently uninhabitable), able to admire the first lake of Moino (m 1881). The path becomes flat, passes beside the second lake of Moino, and reaches the Alpe di Ruggia (1887 m). You then follow the path (M49) that traverses the entire southeast slope of Pizzo Ruggia until reaching Alpe Tenda (1860 m). From Alpe Tenda, you start to descend towards Alpe Pianezza di Vocogno (1645 m.), and through a path (M49) that winds through beautiful beech forests, you reach Alpe Cortaccio di Vocogno (1166 m), and continue to Alpe Fondo Monfracchio (1077 m.) where the kitchens and the main dormitory for workers engaged in the forestry construction site of Onsernone were built in the 1930s/40s of the last century.
From Fondo Monfracchio, you reach the locality of Bagni di Craveggia, a few hundred meters from the Swiss border, home to a precious thermal spring whose natural waters with beneficial properties flow at a constant temperature of about 28°.
The entire itinerary can be traveled on foot or by mountain bike. The return option is provided by the use of the Postale that goes to Spruga in Switzerland and connects with the Vigezzina railway.
