Mersch is the (prosperous) center of the agricultural area in Luxembourg. The Mamer and the Eisch, two small rivers, flow into the Alzette there. The wealth of this area is clearly illustrated by the density of castles: Mersch has one from the twelfth century. To the southwest of Mersch, there are as many as seven; it is appropriately referred to as the Valley of the Seven Castles. To the north of Mersch lies Colmar-Berg, which is entirely dominated by the impressive castle of the Grand Dukes. In Pettingen to the north of Mersch, there is a thirteenth-century castle. In the more southerly located Schoenfels, there is a castle with a sixteenth-century keep.
