The Sauer (German, Luxembourgish: Sauer, Walloon: Seure) is a river in the Belgian province of Luxembourg and in the Grand Duchy of Luxembourg.
From its tributary Our to the confluence of the Sauer into the Moselle, it forms a boundary between Luxembourg and Germany over a length of 50 km. This border section is jointly owned by both countries, just like the Our and Moselle along the same border. The mouth of the river into the Moselle is located near the town of Wasserbillig, the lowest point of the Grand Duchy. The total length is 173 km.
The Sauer originates near Vaux-sur-Sûre in the Ardennes and irrigates small parts of Belgium that belong to the Maas basin along the border of the Grand Duchy. At Martelingen, the river enters the Grand Duchy and a little further, west of Esch-sur-Sûre, into a reservoir, the Lac de la Haute Sûre.
The towns on the Sauer are Ettelbrück, Diekirch, and Echternach. Its tributaries include the Wiltz, the Alzette, the Our, the Prüm, the Black and White Ernz, the Stranche, and the Syrbach.
