The Givenich Prison is the only semi-open prison in Luxembourg. It is located in the village of Givenich, in the municipality of Rosport-Mompach in the canton of Echternach. The prison is an agricultural estate of 130 hectares, which Mathias Theisen junior bequeathed to the Grand Duchy in 1893 on the condition that it would become a charitable and non-profit foundation. The estate was turned into an agricultural penal colony, which welcomed its first placements in 1938. A first cell building was constructed in 1948, followed by a second in 1956. The penal colony was converted into a semi-open prison in 1956.
