The origins of the dam of Esch-sur-Sûre date back to July 30, 1955, when the Minister of Public Works, Mr. Bodson, solemnly laid the first stone. This monumental project, led by the visionary plans of French engineer André Coyne, not only revolutionized dam technology of that time but still stands as a testament to innovative design and functionality.

Constructive genius

The architectural brilliance of the dam lies in its arch design, a groundbreaking approach in the 1950s. This architectural wonder spans a length of 48.00 meters with a width of 4.00 meters at the base and 1.50 meters below the roadway. The roadway has a width of 8.50 meters, including sidewalks. What makes this dam so special is the use of concrete with minimal metal reinforcement, a testament to the construction craftsmanship of that time.

Water reservoir and capacity

The main function of the dam of Esch-sur-Sûre is water management. The reservoir has a total capacity of 62 million m³, with an effective capacity of 53 million m³. This reservoir plays a crucial role in preventing flooding in the village of Bavigne by maintaining a delicate balance with a maximum water level of 321 meters (reference level to the sea). The design of the dam allows for controlled water intake at 277.50 meters, ensuring both functionality and safety.

Generating hydropower

The importance of the dam extends beyond water management, as it serves as a power plant for electricity generation. The power station of Esch-sur-Sûre, operational since February 15, 1960, harnesses the power of water through two main turbines at the base of the dam and additional turbines downstream. The dam contributes to the Luxembourg energy grid and provides a substantial net electricity production of 10.0 GWh.

Dual role: Drinking water production

In a dual role, the dam of Esch-sur-Sûre also significantly contributes to the drinking water supply of Luxembourg. At the end of the 1960s, the construction of the SEBES facilities was completed, and drinking water production was added to the dam's responsibilities. Today, SEBES, the manager of water production, meets about 70% of the country's drinking water needs. The water collection system, installed during the draining of the lake in 1993, ensures the highest water quality standards.

Expansive body of water

The transformation of the Sûre valley in 1959 led to the creation of a vast reservoir of approximately 400 hectares stretching over 16 kilometers. This large body of water submerged four houses and farms and altered the landscape, but ultimately contributed to water management and the sustainability of energy supply in the region.
