The Poelestraat in Groningen runs from the Grote Markt to the Diepenring. Originally, it was mainly a shopping street, but today it is one of the main nightlife centers of Groningen.
The street ran in the Middle Ages - then as Polstraat - from the Hondsrug to the meadows in the bed of the Hunze. 'Pol': elevated lands, also known as wierde. During excavations in 1989, road pavings from the 11th century were found. The street is first mentioned in 1325.
