Zierikzee is a city with a rich history and already had an interesting silhouette in the early 14th century with walls, city gates, churches and windmills. In order to protect Zierikzee from the harbour, two large city gates were built in the 14th century: the Zuidhavenpoort and the Noordhavenpoort.
Important economic pillars were the cloth industry, peat and salt production, fishing and trade with England and the Baltic Sea region. In addition, the city became an important administrative center. In the course of the 15th century, city fires, plague epidemics and silting up of the port resulted in a period of economic decline. After a temporary boom in the 17th and 18th centuries, due to the trade in salt and madder, the economic development of the city stagnated.
