The Dom Church of Utrecht is one of the few churches where you can walk or bike straight through.
The Diocese Church of Utrecht was built on the Castellum Romanum. The cornerstone of this Gothic version of the church was laid by Bishop Hendrik van Vianden in 1254. Construction would last until 1517.
The glory of the dom was not sustainable. Due to the Reformation, revenues collapsed, and maintenance became difficult.
In 1847, the remains of the nave were removed. This place is now the Dom Square, and it separates the tower from the rest of the church. It thus provides an exceptional perspective on this church. Despite the adversity, this is one of the most beautiful examples of Gothic architecture in the Netherlands.
