Sint Philipsland

Description

Sint Philipsland, vastness and tranquility Sint Philipsland is characterized by its vastness and especially by its tranquility. In the 15th century, Anna of Burgundy took the initiative to dike a piece of salt marsh between the Slaak and the Zijpe and founded the village of Sint Philipsland, which she named after her father Philip the Good. A century later, however, the village disappeared into the waves of the sea and was diked again in the 17th century. In 1847, Willem Frederik del Campo diked the Anna Jacobapolder, doubling the area of Sint Philipsland. The church of Flipland was built as a hall church in 1668 and scrap wood was used. It is not known whether this is the cause of the fact that the church regularly needs to be extensively restored. From afar you can see the yellow wooden 18th century flour mill De Hoop on the dike. The last remaining hollow stelle of Zeeland is located in the Rumoirt salt marshes. It is a mountain with a drinking well for the cattle. At high tide, the shepherds and their sheep could retreat to it. Sint Philipsland also has a duck decoy in operation on its territory. The duck decoy consists of a cage pond with 4 ditches lined with reed screens. The cage is used to catch wild ducks, by means of decoy ducks. The duck decoy is managed by the foundation Het Zeeuws Landschap and can be visited on request.
