The quarry in Ratum is a unique piece of nature and owes its existence to decades of industrial limestone mining. The fame of the quarry is growing since it has become known throughout the Netherlands that a Eurasian Eagle-Owl is breeding here.
Here, 240 million-year-old earth layers have formed, making this place known to many geologists. You can also find fossils and the "Winterswijk Gold" (pyrite) here. Normally, the quarry is closed, but after closing hours, we are allowed to descend into the active quarry. Accompanied by a guide, you will learn more about the history of the coulisse landscape, the special natural values, the exceptional geological properties of the area, and the future plans surrounding the quarry on a walk of about 1.5 hours.
