This city gate from the fourteenth century was also called the Bergerpoort or Maestrichterpoort, after the places to which this gate led.
The Grendelpoort, named after a nearby well, survived the destruction of Valkenburg Castle
in 1672 and has recently been extensively restored. On the outside of the gate is a large bronze statue of a gatekeeper in traditional dress.
You can walk under the Grendelpoort, the building itself is not accessible.
