The Sint-Lievens Monstertoren is a 62-metre-high tower that is also known as 'the thick tower' in the vernacular of the inhabitants of Zierikzee. This tower resembles the St. Rumbold's Tower in Mechelen like two drops of water.
This is no coincidence, because the probable designer of the tower was the Mechelen master builder Andries Keldermans. Typical of the style of the Keldermans family are the rich decorations of the tower. Because the construction pit was not allowed to cause any damage to the church, the tower was not attached to the church. The tower was built with several million bricks. They came from the vicinity of Dordrecht, Rotterdam and Gouda, among others. The exterior of the tower was clad in expensive natural stone. The small white blocks of sandy limestone come from the region north and east of Brussels. This stone is called Brabant white bluestone.
