The bridge connects Noordereiland with he old harbour. The bridge is names after king Willem III and designed by C. Veerling. It was created in 1981. In 1983 it got the National price of Steel (Nationale Staalprijs).
The predecessor of this bridge played an important role during Worldwar II. The Dutch army defended this bridge after the inviasion of the Germans on the 10th of May 1940. They could stop the German invasion at this spot and the Germans decided to bomb the center of Rotterdam on May 14 1940.
