By 1945, the occupiers regularly inspected the IJssel with a patrol boat. It was no secret to them that small rowing boats were often used at night between Wilsum and Kamperveen. People in the resistance or other illegal activities were transported from one bank to the other. Via mutual contact addresses, they were then forwarded again. They never received more than one address and always at the very last moment. And of course not on a piece of paper, because if they were caught, they would never have to conjure away a piece of paper. It almost always happened in rough and stormy weather and, of course, at night under a dark moon. As far as is known, they were never caught. During the day, this naval boat was always moored at the unloading dock near the then agricultural barn of the cooperative for the last six months. The Wilsummer ferry could serve as a model for the Koppelse ferry in Oorlogswinter. It is not without reason that the nature reserve on the Wilsum side of the IJssel is called the Koppelerwaard. The white mansion of Baroness Weddik Wansfeld can also be located here, although its size is less than the book suggests. On the Kamperveen side of the IJssel, near the old Wilsummer ferry, lies the centuries-old manor house Groot Oever. A large part of the current buildings is new or renovated, but an outbuilding still retains the white color described in the book. At the beginning of the twentieth century, the ferry connection had access to the Kampen-Nunspeet/Hattemerbroek railway line. From the ferry, you still had to walk about three minutes - including past Groot Oever - to reach the wooden waiting room. There, the train would stop at the passenger's signal. Even before World War II, both the ferry and the railway line lost their function.
