Until the renovation, which began on November 1, 2009, the Stedelijk Museum Roermond was entirely housed in the building that architect P.J.H. Cuypers built for himself and his partner Stoltzenberg in 1853. Behind the house were the workshops for religious art of the Atelier Cuypers and Stoltzenberg.
The foundation for the Stedelijk Museum was laid in 1930, when the Roermond painter Henry Luyten donated part of his work to the city of Roermond. Cuypers' son Jos then made the building available as a home for this collection. Jos Cuypers also designed the Luyten rooms where the paintings were exhibited. Another permanent part of the collection was the work of glass artist Joep Nicolas.
