The National Prison Museum is located in a former workhouse in Veenhuizen. The museum informatively engages with the management of crime and punishment in the Netherlands from 1600 to the present day. Attention is also given to the history of Veenhuizen as a prison village. Although the history of Veenhuizen dates back to 1381, it became known as a prison village since the construction of three large institutions for orphans, beggars, and vagrants. The initiator in 1823 was the Society of Benevolence. Although this was originally based on voluntary participation, it gradually changed into an obligation and later - after the takeover by the national government in 1859 - into punishment. There are still three prisons in operation in Veenhuizen.
