The Diefdijk is a water-retaining dike from the 13th century. In the 18th century, it became part of the Dutch Waterline. The dike was also part of the 19th century New Dutch Waterline. It still serves as a fully-fledged (second) flood defence for the Alblasserwaard and the Vijfheerenlanden.
The eastern border of Everdingen is formed by the Diefdijk, which is also the municipal and provincial border between Utrecht and Gelderland.
