In 1632, the philosopher Spinoza is born in Amsterdam to Jewish Portuguese parents, near the Waterlooplein where there is also a memorial. He had a tremendous influence on thinkers such as Hegel, Nietzsche, and Einstein. After his stay in Amsterdam, Spinoza first finds shelter in Tulpenburg, on the way to Ouderkerk aan de Amstel, in 1660. He then leaves for Rijnsburg and moves in with the surgeon Herman Hooman. That residence is now known as the Spinozahuisje. In the autumn of 1669, he moves to The Hague. He lives for a short time on the Veerkade, after which he moves to the Paviljoensgracht, the house of painter Hendrik van der Spyk. Here, he will live until his death from tuberculosis in 1677. There is still a statue of him there.
