On the way from Laaksem to Stavoren, near the Red Cliff, there is a large boulder with the inscription ''Leaver dea as slaef'', and the year 1345. The stone is a monument to commemorate that more than 650 years ago, the Dutch count William IV was defeated by the Frisians during the Battle of Warns, in an attempt to subjugate the Frisian region. The monument at the Red Cliff was established in 1951. Under the motto ''Leaver dea as slaef'', loosely translated as ''Better dead than enslaved'', the Battle of Warns is commemorated every year on the last Saturday of September.
