The characteristic peat extraction in this area and in the adjacent area of the counts of Holland was the cope cultivation. The 'cope' was the contract that defined the rights and duties of the farmers. The landowners allocated parcels of peatland with fixed dimensions, precisely measured by surveyors. The most common size was a plot of about 1,250 meters long and 113 meters wide (approximately 14 hectares). Once the drainage was arranged, the vegetation on the peat was burned, and after some time the land could then be used as pasture or arable land. The word 'cope' can be recognized in many place names in the peat. Think of Nieuwkoop, Papekop, Boskoop, or Boeicop.
