Do you know the tuunwallen landscape on Texel? Tuunwal is a dialect word that is often translated as "garden wall." In the past, the tuunwal was simply called tuun, where tuun did not mean "garden" but "boundary." Since the 20th century, it has been cheaper for farmers to install fencing made of posts and barbed wire. This has led to many tuunwallen disappearing. In the meantime, they are being protected, and not only are the old tuunwallen maintained, but new ones are also being established. Especially on Texel, the tuunwallen landscape is well preserved.
