Ermelo; Lower Saxon: Armelo, formerly: Armel) is a place in the Veluwe in the Dutch province of Gelderland, and the main town of the municipality of Ermelo. The municipality of Ermelo has approximately 26,225 inhabitants. In its first name mention from the 9th or 10th century, Ermelo was called Irminlo. The part "lo" refers to a forest located on sandy soil. Various explanations are given for "Irmin"; "great", "divine, elevated, large", or it refers to an old Germanic god named "Irmin". There may be a connection with the Saxon sanctuary Irminsul.
