The Cocksdorp

At the northern tip of Texel, near the lighthouse, lies De Cocksdorp. In the youngest village of the island, there is a real holiday atmosphere. Tourists from the nearby holiday parks enjoy visiting the many restaurants and shops on Kikkertstraat. From the dike just outside De Cocksdorp, there is an impressive view over the Wadden Sea.

The youngest village

De Cocksdorp in the north is the youngest village of Texel. The village was established in 1835 at the small harbor, which was located where the Roggesloot flowed into the Eierlandse Gat.

De Cocksdorp

De Cocksdorp was initially called Nieuwdorp, but was renamed after a few months to N.J. de Cock. De Cock was an Antwerp shipping magnate who fled to Rotterdam during the Belgian uprising (1830 - 1839) and, along with others, founded the 'Sociëteit van Slufter near De CocksdorpEigendom van Eierland.' This combination of enterprising gentlemen purchased the marshland from the State in 1835, east of the Zanddijk between the 'old land' of Texel and the island of Eijerland. With the help of 1500 workers, they built an eleven-kilometer-long dike in just twenty weeks, which enclosed the 'buitenveld,' a partially salt-loving plant-covered mudflat area, now known as the Eierlandse polder.
