Steenbergen is a Dutch city located in the west of the province of North Brabant. The place is situated in the municipality of the same name and has a population of 12,555. Steenbergen is connected to the Volkerak via the Steenbergse Vliet, and is also located along the national road N259 and the A4.
Steenbergen was likely founded in the second half of the 13th century and has been considered a city since the first half of the 14th century. It has a rich history and grew in the 14th and 15th centuries, thanks to salt extraction and trade with Antwerp and Flemish cities such as Bruges and Ghent into a trading city. When various causes led to economic decline, Steenbergen became more important as a fortress and garrison town in the 16th century. The fortress became part of the West Brabant water line from 1628.
