Voerendaal is a village in the south of the Dutch province of Limburg and is the capital of the municipality of the same name. The core and the surrounding area have approximately 8,495 inhabitants.
The village has a history that dates back to the 11th century; the first document mentioning Voerendaal is known to be a charter dated June 20, 1065. This charter mentions the consecration of the St. Laurentius Church by Pope Leo IX, which is said to have taken place on August 10, 1049. The St. Laurentius Church near the center is the only church in the Netherlands consecrated by a pope. Older documents are lacking, but historians suspect that the village must be many centuries older. Near the monumental farm Ten Hove, findings have been made of the remains of a Roman villa, the Villa Rustica Voerendaal-Ten Hove. In addition, many other remains of Roman constructions have been uncovered.
