Stadskanaal is a town in the Dutch province of Groningen. In 2021, it has 18,985 inhabitants, making it one of the largest towns in the province. Together with Nieuw-Buinen, which is located across the provincial border, it forms a double nucleus with just under 24,000 inhabitants. The place originated as a peat colony and has grown into a regional center that is the third largest shopping city in the province with 75,142 m2 of retail floor space.
