Description

Ter Horst is a castle northeast of the village of Loenen, in the Dutch province of Gelderland, on the road to Klarenbeek. In 1557, the then mayor of Arnhem, Wynant Hacfort, had the castle built. Even before 1557 there was a castle of the Duke of Guelders here, where the lease of the Veluwe was stored. The floors of the cellars of Ter Horst Castle consist of stones from 1300. But the house that stood here at that time is said to have been destroyed during fighting around 1354. After this destruction, Ter Horst was a farm, until Wynant Hacfort, the then mayor of Arnhem, had a castle built there in 1557. This castle had gables on both side walls as well as on the entrance façade, which are typical of this time. Around 1791, the house was rebuilt by the Arnhem architect Roelof Roelofs Viervant on behalf of Olivier Gerard Willem Joseph Hackfort, with the former rear becoming the front and vice versa. In addition, the castle was given its current imposing neoclassical natural stone façade with Ionic half-columns, which closely resembled the slightly older façade of Felix Meritis on the Keizersgracht in Amsterdam, which was built by Jacob Otten Husly in 1787-1789. During this renovation, the current forecourt, the outbuildings and a bridge between the castle and the forecourt were constructed. In the left annex is a former secret chapel, which served as a Roman Catholic church for Loenen. The chapel has a striking altar with special marble paintings from 1792.
