In 1557, Castle ter Horst was built by the then mayor of Arnhem, Wijnand Hacfort. On the estate where this castle stands, his descendants built coach houses and stables during a major renovation in 1792. A barn, later used as an orangery, served as a storage place for grain. A chapel in the eastern annex was a refuge for Catholics who were not allowed to practice their faith freely at that time.
