Over the centuries, the waters of the (then) Beemstermeer eroded land during each storm, creating an open connection between the Beemstermeer and the Zuiderzee: the Korsloot. This open connection was closed off with a dam at the beginning of the 14th century. The name Schardam (‘schar’ means sea gap) refers to this historical fact.
The dam contained locks that were used by shipping since the Korsloot was part of an important shipping route.
The Noordersluis and Zuidersluis are among the oldest locks owned by the Hoogheemraadschap Hollands Noorderkwartier. The locks date back to the 14th century and were originally made entirely of wood; in the 18th century, the side walls were replaced with stone walls.
