The place Schoonhoven originated along the river Zevender, the course of which can still be recognized in Lange Weistraat. There was a castle located where the current Hofland is.
Schoonhoven was first mentioned in 1247 as Sconhouen. In 1375 and in July 1518, large city fires occurred. In 1575, the Siege of Schoonhoven (1575) took place by Gilles de Berlaymont in service of the Duke of Alva, who, however, gave up winning all of Holland two years later.
As early as the 17th century, there were renowned silversmiths. As of 2010, Schoonhoven still has an international Silver School. The city is thus known as the Silver City.
