DREISCHOR

A characteristic village type for the Zeeland and South Holland islands is the (church) ring village. A (church) ring village consists of a ring of buildings surrounding a central point, often where a church stands with a circular cemetery around it. The originally present moat around the cemetery in many villages has been filled in almost everywhere.
The history of Dreischor goes back to a distant past. On the unembanked salt marshes, shepherds grazed their sheep. The Dreischor marshes were reclaimed around the year 1100. The island of Dreischor was flooded during the Saint Aagten flood (December 14, 1287). Over time, Dreischor was reclaimed again and in this young fertile polder, farmers settled, building their houses and barns on a creek ridge (Weststraat).
Shortly after the reembankment, a small church was also built, which gradually grew into the two-aisled hall church (Saint Adrian's Church) of today.
