The St. Martinus Mill in Didam was built in 1855 on the newly created road from Zeddam to Didam
(the present-day Wilhelminastraat) on the orders of Derk Kempers from Wehl.
The mill appears to stand on a hill, but was actually built from the ground up
and was then surrounded by earth mounded around the mill to reach the
the sails. The St. Martinus Mill belongs to the type of 'band mills'.
Due to its high construction, it catches enough wind to turn effectively and
generate power. From the various sales amounts, it can be inferred that the
original construction costs were about 3,000 fl. (The restoration costs in 2007 were approximately 300,000 €).
The mill is therefore over 150 years old and was restored in 1963 and 1980. In the autumn of 2007
(the year of the mill) a comprehensive restoration was completed.
