The 37 km2 Hortserwold is known as the largest deciduous forest in the Netherlands. But already on this first forest path it turns out that this is not entirely correct: between hazel, oak, alder and beech trees there are dozens of norway spruces. But that variety of wood species just creates a great diversity of mushrooms. What also helps is that the soil here is very calcareous, due to the many shells in the soil.' The Horsterwold is a paradise for mushroom lovers. You will find 1100 species in the Horsterwold. The Dutch Mycological Society and the mushroom working group of Flevoland regularly spend time here in the forest.
