"The Cow" Ermelo

The Cow is a grain and husking mill on Stationsstraat in Ermelo in the Dutch province of Gelderland. It is a smock mill built in 1863 consisting of a wooden octagon on an octagonal brick base, which is painted on the west side. The octagonal posts and cross beams are made of Douglas fir. The wooden octagon weighs approximately 29 tons and the cap without wings weighs 14 tons. The mill has two grinding pairs for milling grain, a husking pair for husking barley, and a pair for grinding oats. The husking pair is located on an intermediate floor, so that if the stones break, the pieces do not fly around. The dead bed of the husking pair consists of a metal plate. The oat pair is located on the floor below the grinding floor and is driven by a long stone shaft via the spur wheel. Because the grinding trough is in the shop, this pair cannot grind either. One of the grinding pairs has a regulator, which, however, runs too slowly due to an incorrect transmission, namely directly via the king post in approximately the ratio of 1:1. Malt is currently being crushed for the local brewery. Furthermore, there is a sifting device and a scale present, which are driven by the mill. In the adjacent warehouse, there is an archaeological museum and a nature education center, which opened in August 2010.
