Already in Roman times there was a settlement here called Caspingium, which was located on the southern heerweg (road for the army) between Noviomagus (Nijmegen) and Lugdunum Batavorum (Katwijk). Quite a few Roman finds have been made in and around Asperen.
Around 1314 Asperen was granted city rights.
North of Asperen along the Linge is the wheel of the Galgenwiel. A wheel is a deep puddle that was created during a dike breach.
