Hornhuizen is a village in the municipality of Het Hogeland in the Dutch province of Groningen. The village has about 120 inhabitants. Hornhuizen is likely to have originated as a daughter settlement of the vanished village of De Houw in the parish of Leens. The earliest mentions are Howerahusum, Horahusum, Horhusum, and Hoerhusen. Hornhuizen probably means 'the new houses of De Houw' and thus not: 'houses in the corner,' as is often thought. According to another explanation, the name would contain the Old Frisian word hore. The Chronicle of Bloemhof notes that in 1247 the church of Howerahusum was burned down. This apparently happened in the context of a long-standing feud in Hunsingo, during which one party received support from Groningen and Middag-Humsterland, while the other could count on help from Fivelingo, Drenthe, and Vredewold.
