Emmen (Drents: Em'm) is a city in the Dutch province of Drenthe. It is the largest place in the municipality of Emmen. As of January 1, 2021, the city had a population of 56,640. Emmen serves a central role in the Zuidenveld region and beyond. Characteristic is the unique urban planning, which is also referred to as the 'open, green city'. New residential areas were built at a relatively long distance from the existing core, in order to preserve landscape valuable areas. The nickname of Emmen is Butterfly City, as an indirect reference to the former Zoo Emmen, which was succeeded by Wildlands Adventure Zoo Emmen in March 2016.
