The earliest mention of Boskoop dates back to 1222. At the beginning of that year, William I, the fourteenth Count of Holland, drew up a deed in which he gave the abbess of Rijnsburg Abbey 100 pounds. The abbess will use this amount to repay a debt to Gijsbrecht van Amstel and his family. As a result, the abbey came into possession of the Count's goods in Buckeskop 'for ever'. It is generally assumed that this name refers to the peat reclamations - called copes - in Boskoop. The name 'Bucke' probably belongs to a holder of a cope from Friesland. It can be deduced from the text of the deed that the count's property in Boskoop is already of such a size that it can serve as collateral. The exact year of the creation of Boskoop is not known, but it could be around 1210. In 1233 the abbess paid off the debt to the Van Amstels and was given control of the Boskoop trade.
