The loam was supplied with the glacial ice in the penultimate ice age. These pits were created because loam was excavated for paving roads and yards. On the loam remnants in and around the pits there is a characteristic flora that is special for the Netherlands. These plants are very vulnerable to disturbance and trespassing, To protect these plants from entry and erosion of the pits they are fenced. After the plants have finished flowering and made seed, the pits are grazed to prevent or reduce molting with blackberries.
