This old sea dyke was built around 1600. It is made of rammed seaweed ('wier'), once protected with wooden stakes, stones, concrete, and sand. For a long time, seaweed dikes were the main sea defenses along the Zuiderzee. The seaweed dyke on Wieringen is a monument to this technique. The dyke runs from the picturesque hamlet of De Elft to the hamlet of De Hoelm.
