Deze oude zeedijk werd gebouwd rond 1600. Hij is gemaakt van aangestampt zeegras ('wier'), ooit beschermd met houten palen, stenen, beton en zand. Lange tijd vormden wierdijken de belangrijkste zeewering langs de Zuiderzee. De wierdijk op Wieringen is een monument voor deze techniek. De dijk loopt van het schilderachtige buurtschap de Elft naar het buurtschap De Hoelm.
