Appeltern

Description

Appeltern is best known for its extensive model garden complex De Tuinen van Appeltern, which receives many tens of thousands of visitors every year.

On the east side of the village is the steam pumping station De Tuut, which can be visited. Next to it is an electric pumping station, which now drains the Nieuwe Wetering and thus keeps the southeastern part of the Land of Maas and Waal dry.

All that remains of the castle of Appeltern are outbuildings. The most famous inhabitant was the patriot Joan Derk van der Capellen tot den Pol, brought to life in the novel Shadowy Image or The Secret of Appeltern (1989) by Hella Haasse.
