The Fort at Uithoorn is part of the Defense Line of Amsterdam. It is sometimes referred to as Fort Amstelhoek in colloquial terms. The fort is located in the village of Amstelhoek in the municipality of De Ronde Venen, and can be seen from the N196. A moat surrounds the fortification.
Around Amsterdam, 45 forts were built starting from 1880. Fort Amstelhoek initially consisted of earthen ramparts, and in 1887 a royal decree approved the construction of a fortification. This was expanded between 1909 and 1911 with bomb-proof buildings, and in 1917, an anti-aircraft unit was established. The garrison then consisted of 321 men.
