Ridderhofstad Bolestein originated from a 14th century residential tower, built by knight Derck de Bole, who was alderman of Utrecht. Many important residents would own Bolestein after him. In the 17th century the castle was converted into a country estate, but the house only got its current appearance at the beginning of the 19th century. From 1942-60 the house was owned by the municipality of Maarssen. The original plan to turn it into a town hall did not go through. However, it became a police station. The previous occupant of Bolestein was the well-known film director Mathijs van Heiningen. Currently it is in the hands of a well-known businessman who thoroughly restored the house in 2000.
