The road runs between the A37 and the German border at Schoonebeek. As evidenced by the hectometer markings, the N853 begins just north of the A37 at the junction with the Verlengde Herendijk. The road is called Dikkewijk there. In Nieuw-Amsterdam, the road is called Vierslagenweg. Near Schoonebeek, the road is called Nieuw-Amsterdamseweg. From the roundabout in Schoonebeek, where the road crosses the N863, to the border, the road is called Lauensteinstraat. After the road crosses the border at the Schoonebeker Diep, it changes into the German L44b and is called Ossestraße there. The next place in German territory is Emlichheim.
