The site is about 343 hectares and is located southeast of the town of Ermelo. On the east side, the Ermelosche Heide is bordered by the provincial road N302. The highest point on the Ermelosche Heide is the so-called "Paalberg", a small moraine from the Ice Age.
The site has been used by different groups of people over the centuries. One can find burial mounds from the time of the Bell Beaker culture. In Roman times, around the year 170, there was a marching camp for the Roman army that was about 9 hectares in size and could accommodate about 4000-6000 legionnaires. The contours of this are still clearly recognizable in the landscape. The earthen defensive walls of the Roman marching camp have the status of national monument and were partly restored in 2006.
