During the time of Hoorn's most extensive wall, the city was accessible through four city gates. The Oosterpoort is the only remaining city gate of Hoorn.
The other gates were the Koepoort at the Koepoortsplein (demolished in 1871), the Noorderpoort that gave access to the Kleine Noord (demolished in 1850) and the Westerpoort that guarded access from the Westerdijk (demolished in 1872).
The basic shape and construction of the Oosterpoort give reason to assume that the gate was not built so much as a defensive gate, but rather as a place of control over who enters and leaves the city and a place for collecting tolls and excise duties. Not least, a city gate at that time was still considered a sign of the power and respect for the city.
