Al tempo della più ampia muraglia di Hoorns, la città era accessibile attraverso quattro porte. L'Oosterpoort è l'unica porta rimasta di Hoorn.
Le altre porte erano il Koepoort in Koepoortsplein (demolito nel 1871), il Noorderpoort, che permetteva l'accesso al Kleinen Noord (demolito nel 1850) e il Westerpoort, che proteggeva l'accesso dal Westerdijk (demolito nel 1872).
La forma e la costruzione dell'Oosterpoort suggeriscono che la porta non fosse stata costruita tanto come porta di difesa, ma piuttosto come un luogo di controllo su chi entra ed esce dalla città, e come luogo per la riscossione di dazi e imposte sui consumi. Non da ultimo, una porta cittadina all'epoca era ancora considerata un segno di potere e di rispetto nei confronti della città.
