Zur Zeit der umfangreichsten Mauer Hoorns war die Stadt über vier Stadttore zugänglich. Das Oosterpoort ist das einzige verbliebene Stadttor von Hoorn.
Die anderen Tore waren das Koepoort am Koepoortsplein (1871 abgerissen), das Noorderpoort, das den Zugang zum Kleinen Noord ermöglichte (1850 abgerissen) und das Westerpoort, das den Zugang vom Westerdijk schützte (1872 abgerissen).
Die Grundform und Konstruktion des Oosterpoorts lassen vermuten, dass das Tor nicht so sehr als Verteidigungstor gebaut wurde, sondern eher als Ort der Kontrolle darüber, wer die Stadt betritt und verlässt, und als Ort für die Erhebung von Zöllen und Verbrauchsteuern. Nicht zuletzt galt ein Stadttor damals noch als Zeichen der Macht und des Respekts vor der Stadt.
